About Us

NutraPet Systems was founded in 2006 by Gerhard Poppel.  We renovate existing products and processes to enable our clients to better compete in a highly competitive environment dominated by multinationals like Nestle-Purina, Mars, P&G and Colgate. 

We focus first on the needs and wellbeing of pets and their owners without neglecting the requirements of industry and regulators. We have the technical expertise of the big players and the speed and decision making capabilities of true entrepreneurs. We think globally and strike locally.

earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Food Science and Technology from the University of Applied Science in Berlin, Germany, and an MBA from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas.

Gerd began his career in 1977 in the Food and Pet Food Industry with Stockmeyer AG and later with Effem/Mars Inc. in Germany in R&D, QA/QC, Manufacturing and Procurement. He was transferred to Vernon, Calif. in 1989 to head up Product Development and Technology Transfer for KalKan Inc. the US Pet Care division of Mars.

In 1993, Gerd joined Nestle R&D as Group Manager/Director of Engineering and Packaging in St. Joseph, Mo. From there, he accepted a Deputy Director position in Nestlé R&D in Kemptthal, Switzerland. In 1997, he served as the SBU Technical Manager in Vevey, Switzerland, for six months and then moved back to St. Joseph, Mo., as the Head and Vice President of R&D for all Nestle Pet Care activities. This global responsibility included R&D Centers in Amiens, France and St. Joseph, MO.

With the acquisition of Ralston Purina by Nestle in late 2001, Gerd assumed the additional responsibility to lead the integration and consolidation of two major global R&D organizations. Based at the Headquarter in St. Louis, Gerd was able to capture millions in synergies by streamlining the R&D organization. Focusing on research in areas of canine and feline genomics, he pioneered patented technologies to improve the well being and longevity of animals. Consumer driven value added concepts fueled an impressive pipeline of new products and proprietary technologies providing sustainable profitable growth, transforming Nestle Purina into the world largest Pet Care Company.

In August 2004 Gerd followed the calling of the President and CEO of Phoenix Scientific to take on the role as Vice President of Operations responsible for Production, Shipping and Receiving, Engineering and Maintenance as well as QA/QC. Following the acquisition by IVAX in May 2005 and shortly after by Teva, Gerd has been instrumental in leading the successful DVM integration and production transfers from Miami to St. Joseph. Gerd also introduced nutritional products and developed highly palatable oral drug delivery systems for companion animals.

Gerd left IVX Animal Health by the end of 2006 to start his own company developing new and unique products for the pet care and animal health industry. The latest developments embrace a range of nutritional products and treats including pet beverages marketed in Europe and recently launched in veterinary channels in the US. Gerd is a patent holder of US Patent 5792504 and EP Patent 129553

Outside his busy schedule, Gerd enjoys his family and many outdoor activities including snow skiing, golf, hunting and hiking. Gerd holds a private pilot certificate, is fluent in German and English with basic skills in French. Gerd also has volunteered over many years for several community service organizations such as the Rotary Club and the Board of Directors at the local Chamber of Commerce.
